The Thyroid Gland

The Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland located at the base of the neck, below the Adam's Apple. The thyroid regulates the rate of the body's metabolism, as well as the rates of many other functions in the body, through the secretion of the hormones T3 and T4.

Thyroid Diseases and symptoms

The most common thyroid problems include an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and lumps called thyroid nodules, which are usually benign but can be cancerous. See right for information on the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of different thyroid disorders.
